Zečevo between Krka Waterfalls and Roman History

In the area around Zečevo, Krka waterfalls, Roman traces and mill culture come together. This lets you combine experiences in nature with cultural history, rather than limiting yourself to just one kind of excursion. At Roški slap, waterways, cascades and mills shape the landscape; at Burnum, the focus is on preserved remains of a Roman military camp. Longer routes pass through wetlands and woodland. Waterfalls, Mills and Trails

Roški slap is an extensive waterfall area with main falls 22.5 metres high, numerous waterways and cascades, and travertine islands. Several watermills stand on the left bank; some are still in operation. Visitors to Roški slap can also see watermills, columns and a loom. The mill complex is considered one of the most interesting and valuable ethnographic monuments in Dalmatia and Croatia. Here, nature and traditional craft culture are part of the same excursion.

A comparison of heights reveals another side of the waterfall landscape: the main falls at Roški slap are 22.5 metres high, while nearby Manojlovački slap has a total height of 59.6 metres. Its highest travertine barrier is 32.2 metres high. Manojlovački slap is the third and highest waterfall on the Krka; it lies on the Knin–Kistanje road, a few hundred metres from the Burnum archaeological site.

Those who would like to spend more time walking will find an 8.5-kilometre trail in the surrounding area, running from wetlands to a centuries-old forest of European hornbeam and downy oak. During bird migration, the wetlands are described as one of Europe’s most important bird sanctuaries. The Lugareva kuća education centre is located in the forest along the trail. The Pištavac trail follows a different route: it descends a steep slope through lush greenery to the water; along the way, you can hear birds and the choruses of amphibians.

Roman Traces and Archaeological Finds

Nearby Burnum was built around the turn of the era as a Roman military camp. Visitors can see the preserved arches of the command building, a Roman military amphitheatre and several walls of the military training ground. Burnum is home to Croatia’s only military amphitheatre. The site is accessible only by road. Finds from Burnum—including weapons, tools and everyday objects—are on display at Eko kampus Puljane. Oziđana pećina also offers a broader perspective on the area’s early history: continuous human presence in the cave is documented from 6000 to 1500 BC, and an archaeological collection has been set up in situ there.

Krka Monastery and Boat Trips

Several cultural features can be found at Krka Monastery: a Byzantine-style church stands next to it. Early Roman catacombs beneath the church are open to visitors, according to official visitor information. From Roški slap, the monastery can be reached both by road and on organised boat trips.
