Roman traces, the Krka River and nature come together in the Municipality of Kistanje. The Krka flows through the municipality; part of Krka National Park lies in its eastern section. Burnum and the Kraljevska Route
At the Burnum archaeological site, visitors can see the surviving arches of the command building and several walls of the military training ground. Croatia’s only surviving military amphitheatre is located in the area of the village of Ivoševci. Together, these structures give the site a tangible connection to its military history.
Burnum, the 1st-century Roman military camp, is also the endpoint of the “Kraljevska” cycling route. It starts at the Krka National Park public institution’s branch office in Skradin, passes through Rupe and Kistanje, and ends in Burnum. If you are planning to include a cycling trip, this route includes Kistanje and Burnum as named stops.
Water and trails in the Municipality of Kistanje
The “Krka – vrelo života” nature interpretation centre in Kistanje presents the fundamental importance of water to life on our planet in a modern and interactive way. The centre has a different focus from Burnum: water is at the heart of the former, while the latter is about the surviving traces of a Roman military site.
Krka Monastery is located in Carigradska draga. The Pištavac Trail is accessed from the reception area of Krka Monastery. There is an outdoor car park at the start of the Pištavac Trail; the gravel path descends steeply to the Krka River, and you return along the same route. When planning a day hike, take both the steep descent and the return along the same path into account.
The Trošenj–Pištavac Trail can be reached from Kistanje, from the reception area of Krka Monastery, or via Čučevo; follow the signposts. At the Kistanje I entrance, there is a car park and an information centre. If you are counting on using these facilities, check their current availability in advance.

A further look at Murter
Murter and the Kornati Islands are in the western part of Šibenik-Knin County; Krka and Kornati National Parks are in the same county. The island of Murter has four main settlements: Murter, Betina, Jezera and Tisno. In Betina, the Betina Museum of Wooden Shipbuilding regularly screens a documentary about the shipbuilders and the highlights of the local shipbuilding tradition. The skill and art of building the Betina gajeta has been recognised by the Croatian Ministry of Culture and protected as intangible cultural heritage of the Republic of Croatia. Every year at the end of September, the Latinsko idro regatta takes place as an expression of Murter’s maritime tradition.
