The landscape around Kistanje is characterised by its location on the Bukovica limestone plateau, which is part of the Dalmatian hinterland.
Culture
The village is home to the Orthodox Church of Saint Nicholas, dating from around 1536, and the Orthodox Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius, built in 1890. The Krka Monastery, founded in 1350, is located about four kilometres from Kistanje. Ancient Roman catacombs beneath the monastery church are open to visitors.
Surroundings
In the vicinity of Kistanje, visitors can see the arches of the command building, a military amphitheatre and the walls of the military training area at Burnum. The Krka Monastery can be visited from Roški slap from April to October as part of organised boat excursions. The path and viewpoint at Manojlovac Waterfall were cleared and reopened to visitors in 2011.
Events and culinary delights
In the surroundings of Kistanje, the cultural heritage festival Burnumske Ide is organised every summer in Burnum by Krka National Park and has continued since 2011. The event Dan sira i maslinovog ulja presented local cheeses and olive oils; it also included tastings of local products as well as a cultural and entertainment programme. At the Buša na p'jatu event, local family farms displayed their products at the Eko market in Kistanje. Dan sira i maslinovog ulja was scheduled to take place on 24 July 2025 at the “Eko Centre market” in Kistanje.
