Culture and History
Korita is a place with a history dating back to the 15th century. The settlement emerged after residents of Žara moved here following the destruction of Okuklje. Its historical heritage includes a fortified tower associated with the defence against pirate attacks. Its strategic location served to monitor the Mljet Channel and the open sea.
In the centre of Korita, next to the fortified tower, stands the Chapel of St Vid. The Gothic-Renaissance building was completed in 1488. A Gothic chalice, a Renaissance pax, and a bronze service bell have been preserved. The Chapel of St Ilija also dates from the 15th century. The Church of Gospa od Brijega, likewise built in the 15th century, retains a Renaissance-Baroque structure and a lead pax by an Italian master.
Religious Traditions
The feast of St Ilija on 20 July is associated with a local pilgrimage tradition. The procession leads from St Vid through Korita and past Gospa od Brijega, carrying the venerated image of Gospa.
Local Character
The settlement’s former livelihood has also been passed down through history. Korita’s historical economy was connected with fishing and with the catching and sale of salted sardines, particularly in the 17th and 18th centuries.
