Goveđari, a village founded in the 18th century, lies inland within Mljet National Park. The village is connected to Polače and the Great Lake.
Nature
The Great Lake connected with Goveđari is part of the two-bay saltwater lake system consisting of Veliko jezero and Malo jezero, which forms a self-contained ecosystem. Veliki Planjak, Otočić Pomeštak and Otočić Glavat are located in the vicinity of Goveđari. Grabova Glava and Sutmiho are situated in the surrounding area. Sveto Trojstvo, Kremena and Sveti Liberan are located in the wider regional area.
Getting Around
In addition to the asphalt road, Goveđari can also be reached on foot via numerous paths. A hike through Mljet National Park can begin here; it can be completed in individual sections or as a route lasting approximately four hours. Along the way, it connects the two forest-fringed saltwater lakes, the island of St. Mary with its 12th-century Benedictine monastery, and orchid observation in spring.
Culture and History
In the spatial plan for Mljet National Park, Goveđari is designated as an ethnovillage because of its authenticity and state of preservation. Scientific lectures on microfossils and palaeobotanical research were held at the Galerija Stara skula in Goveđari.
The Church of Sv. Nikola, dating from the 20th century, as well as traditional threshing floors and buildings associated with livestock farming, are located nearby. As part of the Festa sv. Nikole, the programme included a mass in this church followed by a boat procession from Polače.
