History and Culture

The former Church of Saint Anthony in Maranovići was destroyed by pirates in 1725. The present parish church of Saint Anthony was completed in 1888 on the site of an older church that had been completely demolished, and preserves Gothic elements connected with the former church building. It is also associated with a late-Renaissance chalice made of gilded silver, with a six-lobed foot, dating from the 15th century.

On the hill above Maranovići lies Vrhmljeće, described as one of the oldest Slavic settlements on Mljet and historically regarded as a place hidden from pirate attacks. The remains of the Church of Saint Mary of the Hill in the former Vrhmljeće are located nearby. They include a Gothic window and a Romanesque portal; the ruins are surrounded by a cemetery with roughly hewn stone grave slabs. The comparatively well-preserved appearance of Maranovići is considered important to the character of the surrounding area.

Landscape

Below Maranovići, a cave is considered a particularly valuable natural site. At a bend in the D120 road, there is a view of Maranovići and the surrounding area.
