The old town of Novi Vinodolski is a stone historic quarter on a hill above the sea bay and the mouth of the Ričina, at the exit of the Vinodol Valley. When planning a stay in Novi Vinodolski, the desire to rent a holiday apartment may be the main consideration.

Culture and History

The Frankopan Castle stands in the old town centre; it was built in the 13th century during the rule of the Princes of Krk. The compact stone houses and narrow lanes of the old town lead to the parish church of St Philip and St James. The Vinodol Code was also written here, in Croatian and in the Glagolitic script, on 6 January 1288 in the Frankopan Castle.

The National Museum and the Novi Vinodolski Gallery opened to visitors in 1951; since 1973, they have been housed in the Frankopan Castle and the Turnac Tower. The National Museum’s permanent exhibition comprises archaeological, underwater archaeological, numismatic, ethnographic, historical, sacred and art collections.

Novljanski Mesopust was declared intangible cultural heritage of the Republic of Croatia in 2011. The customs begin on the Thursday three weeks before Ash Wednesday and continue until Ash Wednesday; they include events, dances, and specially prepared food and drinks.

Coast and Nature

The central Lišanj Beach offers water and sand sports, tennis courts, a children’s playground, food and drink services, sun lounger and parasol hire, and a diving centre. The islet of San Marino lies 205 metres off the coast of Novi Vinodolski. It has walking paths and eight benches marked with the names of the local winds.

The “Fishermen’s Stories” educational trail combines nature, culture and fishing tradition. Information panels cover the local history of fishing and the protection of the marine environment.

The Chapel of the Holy Cross stands on a hill overlooking Novi Vinodolski. The Church of Saint Marin on the islet of San Marino dates from the Gothic period.

Wine

In the heart of its vineyard, the Pavlomir Winery has a cellar and a tasting room that visitors can use for wine experiences. At Pavlomir, visitors can taste Žlahtina, other wines from the winery, and the “1288” and “San Marino” sparkling wines.

Other Buildings in the Town Centre

The Church of the Holy Trinity is a well-preserved Gothic church in the old town of Novi Vinodolski.
