Geographical location
The through road in Gornji Zagon was completely paved in 2019. From Bater, the route continues through the historic coastal hamlets of Krasnica, Kal, Trbotinj, Valač and Plužnica. Historically, these five settlements were collectively known as Gornje Zagonje. Regional road ŽC5093 connects Gornji Zagon with Donji Zagon; county road ŽC5219 connects Bribir with Gornji Zagon.
Culture and history
The Church of Saint Anthony in Gornji Zagon is listed as a historic building. The newly built Chapel of Saint Anthony stands in Plužnica. Descendants of residents of Gornji Zagon built it in 2020/2021 as a legacy for future generations and dedicated it to the saint revered by the ancestors of Gornji Zagon’s inhabitants.
The Zavičajna udruga Plužnice is working to restore, clean, organise and improve the five hamlets that make up Gornji Zagon. The villages of Gornji Zagon were settled in the 17th century and abandoned in the 1970s. Oral tradition attributes the founding of the five settlements to 18 families. During the Second World War, the area of Gornji Zagon was designated as the centre of a free partisan territory.
Getting around
The Rijeka–Bater section of EuroVelo 8 is 55 kilometres long and consists entirely of asphalt or macadam. Accommodation is available in Gornji Zagon along this section.
