The Historical and Ethnographic Collection of Mrkopalj opened in 2017 in the centre of Mrkopalj, on the first floor of the cultural centre. It contains more than 550 historical photographs and approximately 200 old objects. Items on display include a document concerning the establishment of the parish in 1771, handmade skis and ski poles, snowshoes, and a rescue sled. The 1933 design for “Pod Vrhin” adds a specific document to these insights into skiing history.
The collection is open Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 15:00, and advance booking is required. Places beyond the collection also tell the story of the area’s past: the Calvary in Mrkopalj consists of three crosses with bronze sculptures. The Fajeri are remnants of the old Karolina Road, dating from 1732, in the Mrkopalj area. Fortica preserves the remains of an old Croatian church from the 12th or 13th century in the Mrkopalj area.
Matić poljana is a memorial site with 26 stones. They commemorate 26 soldiers who died in a snowstorm in February 1944. The Church of Our Lady of Seven Sorrows in Mrkopalj has a different, annual connection to local history: pilgrims visit it every year on the third Sunday in September.
