Grobnik’s old town is now an important cultural landmark for the wider Grobnišćina region and invites you to explore its rich heritage on foot. Grobnik Castle is now a gallery and museum, as well as a venue for various cultural events. Restoration work on the south tower was funded as part of the “Putevima Frankopana” project. The work included repairs to the roof, façade and walls, as well as the renewal of floors and carpentry.
The 5 km Čavle - C5 Frankopanska staza offers a practical way to discover historic sites. It leads to monuments from the time of the Frankopans. The sites along the route include Kaštel Zrinskih i Frankopana, the country house of the nobleman Franjo Frankulin, dating from 1660, and the churches of Sv. Filipa i Jakova, Sv. Trojice and Sv. Križa. Along the way, views open up over the Rječina Gorge, Rijeka and the Kvarner. The Church of Sv. Filipa i Jakova in Grobnik has stood there for 900 years, bearing witness to early Christianity in this area.

Platak and outdoor activities

Regional cuisine and festivals
Grobnik cheese and potato polenta, “kompirica”, are symbols of a food culture shaped over generations: both dishes sustained the people of Grobnik. The Festival of Polenta and Cheese is held in their honour. It takes place every year in late June, in Čavle in odd-numbered years and in Jelenje in even-numbered years. The programme also includes the children’s cooking event Little Polenta (“Mića palenta”); the festival also features cheesemaking in a natural setting.
Another celebration is Bartoja. In late August, it brings residents from across the municipality together to celebrate St Bartholomew’s Day. The programme includes religious, cultural, entertainment, sporting and culinary events.
