Hiking and cycling in a range of formats
Six hiking trails lead to Planinarski dom Hahlić. Descriptions of the routes, photos, video presentations and GPX tracks are also available. Another option is the Šetnica uz Sušicu: this circular recreational trail follows the Sušica, a tributary of the Rječina, is rated easy and is more than 2 kilometres long. Cyclists will also find options at different scales: the municipal cycling network comprises nine routes covering a total of 170 kilometres. The Trnduro route in Jelenje is described with its own stage and elevation figures: it has five stages and five climbs, with a total elevation gain of 1,010 metres over 18.2 kilometres. There are also five descents with a combined length of 6.2 kilometres. These specific figures can help you consider the route, but they do not indicate how long it takes to walk or ride.
The Rječina Canyon and stone structures
The Rječina Canyon covers 677.91 hectares within the municipality. Conservation measures protect its water and wetland habitats, as well as the important biological species found there. Nature in the Municipality of Jelenje is therefore more than a backdrop for activities: water and wetland habitats are explicitly part of the protected area.
The Nebeski labirinti are another unusual place to explore. The nine stone structures are connected to planets and specific meanings according to a special plan. Visitors can walk barefoot over the stones. This offers a different way to experience the site than the marked hiking and cycling routes, with the shapes and symbolic associations of the labyrinths at its heart.
Milling traditions and Grobnik customs
In Martinovo Selo, the Gašparov mlin watermill has been grinding wheat and corn for four centuries, powered by the Rječina. Visitors can learn how grain is turned, step by step, into a loaf of bread. They can also buy organic flour and see historic milling equipment, including an old sieve. The mill thus brings together a craft that is still practised today and insights into the individual stages of breadmaking.
Recurring events include the international folklore event “Zakantajmo i zatancajmo po domaći va Jelenju”. It takes place in Dražice as part of Mihoja and the Municipality of Jelenje Day, and has been held for more than two decades. The Grobnička balinjerada also combines a clearly described occasion with a distinctive format: every year, around 20 creative carts race down a steep descent from Jelenje to the Sušica Bridge. It has been held for more than 15 years in January or February, depending on the duration of Carnival.
Another custom marks the beginning of the year: on the first weekend after Epiphany, the Grobnički dondolaši traditionally parade with the sound of bells through almost all the settlements of Grobinština, in the municipalities of Jelenje and Čavle. They are a folklore and tourist attraction of the Grobniština region. For a quieter look at the past, there are also cultural and memorial sites: Margareta Krstić’s permanent exhibition in Dražice comprises 15 sculptures depicting the lives and clothing of ancestors at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. In Soboli, a monument with 91 shields commemorates the residents of Podhum who were killed in July 1942; a memorial is held at the site every year. The Mlikarica monument in Dražice symbolises the Grobnik region and its historically difficult way of life.
