Another remarkable natural feature is “Kraljica Šume”: the huge fir tree is estimated to be over 250 years old and 42 metres tall. Cave and karst trails
Špilja Lokvarka has been protected as a geomorphological natural monument since 1961. Of its six levels, the first four are open to visitors. The section of the cave explored to date is 1,179 metres long; the cave is 275 metres deep.
The “Staza spilja” offers another way to discover the karst landscape, following interesting and attractive roads and paths. Along the 10.82 km trail, visitors can see speleological features as well as numerous karst formations and decorations. You can take the exact route length into account when planning your day; on its own, it does not indicate the walking time or difficulty level.
Local history and flavours
The “Muzej žaba” has been established in the KC “Picirk” building in Lokve. The traditional “Žabarska noć” is also part of the local events calendar: it has been held in Lokve since 1974.
Kuća prirode “Kotač” combines a permanent exhibition about the history of Lujzinska cesta with insights into the production of autochthonous Gorski kotar herbal liqueurs. Visitors can see the room where the liqueurs are made, as well as the attic where mountain herbs and plants are dried for their production. You can also sample the herbal liqueurs there. History, production and flavour offer different ways to engage with local themes.
