Donji Okrug: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Donji Okrug is located in the Kupa Valley, the only inhabited area of Risnjak National Park, and is one of the settlements within the national park in the administrative area of the city of Delnice. The source of the Kupa and its surrounding area have been protected since 1963. At an altitude of 1,528 metres, the Risnjak massif offers views towards Kvarner Bay, Istria and the Julian Alps.

Nature and Landscape

In Risnjak National Park, visitors may only move along marked paths designated for sightseeing; these include hiking and educational trails. There are fourteen hiking trails in total, most of which are classified as moderately difficult. The national park recommends wildlife watching from May to November. The animals listed include bears, wolves, deer, foxes, wild boar and numerous bird species.

The path from Razloge to the source of the Kupa descends steeply to the river’s source. Along the 4.2-kilometre path to the source, there are 23 information boards. Near the source there is also the Rodna kuća rijeke Kupe visitor centre, which presents the river’s biodiversity.

The national park has marked cycling routes ranging from 4.2 to 40 kilometres in length. Recreational fishing is subject to a special restriction: only fly-fishing with a single barbless fly or with a hook whose barb has been pinched down is permitted.

Culture

Donji Okrug is one of the places in the Kupa Valley identified as having traditional architecture and ethnographic heritage. Typical houses in Gorski Kotar are made of stone and wood, have steep roofs and decorated gables.

The Goranska kuća znanja is located in an old village school. It preserves the history and memories of Razloge and also presents shingle-making in Gorski Kotar, rural architecture, crafts, weaving, pastures and beekeeping.

The Roman Road through Risnjak National Park runs from Platak towards Lazac and is described as the shortest route from Gerovo towards Platak and Rijeka. The Leska educational trail can be explored independently or with professional guidance. Šumska pedagogija is a guided group programme lasting two to four hours for schoolchildren, people with special needs and adults.

Risnjak National Park has additional entrances to the information centres in Kupari and Razloge. There are information points with parking areas at both park entrances.
