Nature

Japlenški vrh is a protected park forest established in 1953 in the area of Grad Delnice. The recorded natural features include striking karst sinkholes and recorded caves.

The dolomite bedrock of Japlenški vrh supports populations of Christmas rose, hepatica and Hacquetia epipactis. These plants are rare or absent on limestone.

Activities

Numerous branching walking paths connect Japlenški vrh directly to the urban fabric of Delnice. The 9 km-long, well-marked Japlenški vrh–Golubinjak hiking trail connects two protected park forests.

The 5 km-long Delnice MTB trail also runs through the park forest. In the nearby area, the Petehovac mountain centre built the first cable car and the first ski slopes in Croatia for the Kurikkala Cup in 1962. Petehovac offers seasonal summer and winter activities there by prior arrangement.

Pansion Lovački in Delnice has a mini-zoo with deer, as well as cycling and fitness trails on its grounds.

Culture and History

Popovićev mlin is a preserved electric mill in Delnice. It was built in 1925 and has its original milling equipment; visits are possible by prior arrangement.

Rački House is a protected site of architectural and ethnic heritage and has been set up for visits at Supilova 94 in Delnice. Its age is estimated at 200 to 300 years. Reconstruction and protection aimed to preserve its original character.

The present-day Church of Saint John the Baptist in Delnice was built from 1825 to 1829 and has late Baroque main and side altars. It has three naves; the altar of Saint John the Baptist dominates the central nave. Its consecration is associated with 2 June 1829, after the former church in Vidm had completely burned down.

A fountain on the Delnice Stream Potok was built in 1903 by three local carter families. The Potok area served as a resting place on an old trade route between the interior and the sea.

The traditional costume of Delnice is predominantly white and includes a colourful Fiertof apron, a woven wool belt, a coral necklace and a Kluofnca clasp.

Ivanjske kresnice is a tradition from Delnice presented in June. Unmarried girls traditionally threw daisy wreaths onto wooden roofs to interpret when they would marry.

Vidm in Delnice was the site of a former cemetery and a former parish church; both are mentioned in records from 1732. The Chapel of the Holy Cross on Calvary underwent extensive restoration from 2003 onwards, with the aim of restoring its religious function.

Cuisine

The cuisine of Delnice and Gorski Kotar is based on potatoes, sauerkraut, beans, pork and poultry, preserved winter vegetables and fruit compote. Regional specialities also include game, mushrooms and freshwater fish such as trout.
