The Municipality of Pićan is located in central Istria, in the Labinština area. The 51-square-kilometre municipality is surrounded by fields and vineyards. Its character combines open rolling countryside with a remarkable historic town centre: the town of Pićan sits on a prominent limestone hill west of the Čepićko polje. If you are looking for a rural setting for your holiday apartment, as well as a destination steeped in history, Pićan offers a specific starting point.
The protected landscape between Gračišće and Pićan is also part of the area's character. It covers 570 hectares and has unusual geological features. The landscape and the historic town offer different points of interest: here, the natural environment and geological features take centre stage; there, buildings and traces of the town's history. You can therefore focus your stay according to your interests.
Architectural monuments in the historic town
Pićan's buildings tell stories of different eras. The monumental town gate dates back to the 14th century and was restored in 1613 for Bishop Antonio Zara. The white limestone bell tower was built in 1872 and is 48 metres high. At its base is also a historic stone measure, once used to measure the dues paid by subjects. These details make the town's history tangible in specific places.
The parish church of the Annunciation of Mary acquired its present exterior through renovation in 1753; its interior was given a Baroque makeover under Bishop Piccardia. The Church of St. Roch, in turn, was founded during a major plague epidemic, and Bishop Gašpar Bobek laid its foundation stone. In the park in front of the entrance to Pićan stands a statue of St. John of Nepomuk, erected in 1714. A small passage leads into the gardens, from where you can see the best-preserved section of the town walls.
Istrian culture and viewpoints
Opposite the parish church stands the birthplace of Matko Brajša Rašan. In 1912, he composed what is now the official Istrian anthem, “Krasna zemljo,” to a text by Ivan Cukon. Another way to explore regional culture is CENKI, the Centre for the Intangible Culture of Istria, run by the Ethnographic Museum of Istria. It was established in Pićan in 2011 and is dedicated to researching, documenting, preserving and sharing intangible culture. This includes examining how knowledge and practices endure in rural and urban settings.
Several viewpoints add a scenic perspective to your exploration. From the Franz Ferdinand viewpoint, you can look out over the rolling landscape of central Istria. The St. Helena viewpoint is at the other end of the historic settlement; its name recalls a church that once stood there. At the Church of St. Michael, the stone sculpture “The Family” by Nane Zavagno, created in 1999, complements a natural viewpoint. The single-nave Romanesque church, dating from the 13th century, stands on a neighbouring hill north of the centre.
Waterfalls and seasonal differences
The St. Roch trail 702 starts in Pićan, passes through the forest to the spring of St. Nicephorus and leads to Sopot Waterfall. It is 24.5 metres high, with a turquoise lake at its foot. You can drive to the waterfall from Floričići. From the main road between Pazin and Labin, reach Floričići via Zajci and follow the signs to Jakomići and Švići.
Another waterfall near Pićan is located by Most Pićan: Benkovski Waterfall is about 40 metres high. It carries water mainly in autumn, winter and spring, and dries up in summer. This seasonal change is worth bearing in mind when planning your trip if the waterfall itself is a key reason for your stay. Sopot Waterfall and Benkovski Waterfall also differ in the features described for each: their height and location, and, in the case of Benkovski Waterfall, its seasonal flow.
PetiVina takes place in Pićan on the first weekend of June, bringing together winemakers, wine lovers, local products and homemade crafts. If you are interested in wine and regional produce, this festival adds a cultural event to the historic and scenic highlights.
