Nature

Boljunsko Polje is classified as an area of landscape significance. The protected area HR2001215 Boljunsko polje is associated with six listed target species, including the Balkan barbel, Italian crested newt, yellow-bellied toad, lesser horseshoe bat, Bechstein’s bat and primorska uklija. In the area of the upper course of the Boljunčica, there is a maternity roost of lesser horseshoe bats, considered the largest colony of its kind on the Istrian Peninsula. Vela Draga is located nearby; it is protected as a nature reserve and geomorphological natural monument.

Culture

In the hamlet of Opatija, which belongs to the village, is the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel. It was built in 1670 on the site of a former Benedictine abbey. Its interior contains an elaborately decorated wooden altar with a 1676 retable known as the “golden altar”; the main altar features a statue of the Virgin Mary with the Child.

Nearby, Boljun Castle has been preserved and is considered interesting to visit. From Boljun Castle, there are views across Boljunsko Polje and Učka.

Paths and Activities

The Vela Draga educational trail begins at the Zrinščak Tunnel and ends in Boljunsko Polje. It includes a shorter, easier section to a viewpoint and a longer, more difficult section through the gorge.

Orientation

The Vranja–Šušnjevica road runs along the edge of Boljunsko Polje; roads branch off from there towards Boljun and Paz.

Local

The Buretić farm at Mandići 8, Boljunsko Polje, combines a livestock and dairy tradition spanning generations with the production of dairy products and organic cheese made from cow’s milk.
