Veljaki: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Culture and History

The Vlaški puti Ecomuseum in Šušnjevica combines an interpretation centre, a media library and themed hiking trails through Učka. Together, they convey local social history, traditional culture, and the Vlaški, or Istro-Romanian, language and culture.

Nearby, the medieval Kaštel Kožljak stands at an altitude of 210 metres on a steep rocky cliff above the former Čepić Lake. The access staircase and sections of the defensive wall have been preserved.

The cultural heritage in the wider Kršan area includes medieval Kršan Castle, the Glagolitic inscription in Plomin, Kožljak Castle, and Romanesque church heritage with 15th-century frescoes. In Jasenovik, the Romanesque Church of Saint Quirinus preserves a well-preserved fresco on its north wall depicting the Adoration, along with figures of apostles, saints and prophets. The Kršan Kaštel preserves a tall, four-sided tower in a fortified residential complex with a cistern courtyard.

Kršonski pir is a nine-scene folk depiction of a wedding custom from Kršan and its surroundings and ends with the baptism of the couple’s child. The performance includes a wedding procession, the departure for the church, communal meals and a wedding celebration with the symbolic cutting of a cake.

Trails and Landscape

The themed Putevima kontrabanda trails lead through Učka Nature Park and provide information about smuggling in the 1930s from the former Kvarner Free Trade Zone.

Učka Nature Park guides visitors along the road from Vranja towards Šušnjevica and then onwards to Kožljak.

The Kršan area lies between Kvarner Bay, Plomin Bay and Plomin Cove, the Raša Valley, the hills of central Istria, the Učka area and Brestova Cove.

Wild Plants and Events

The samoniklog bilja festival is an annual spring festival held in Kršan. Its workshops cover natural cosmetics, teas, tinctures, oils, fragrances and cooking with wild plants. Exhibitors of plant-based products and chefs also present dishes prepared with wild plants.

Cesta šparuga offers dishes with wild asparagus, which can be sampled in April and May. Wild asparagus grows in spring in the local forests, shrubs and fields.
