Landscape and trails around Gračišće

The protected landscape of Gračišće covers an area of 702.59 hectares within the municipality. One specific trail through a protected area is the Staza svetog Šimuna (701) loop: it starts and ends in Gračišće, is 8.9 kilometres long and is rated moderate. The entire trail runs through an area designated as a protected landscape in the 1970s. Along the way, it leads to Sopot Waterfall by an old bridge. Its length and rating give you a practical point of reference when planning this walk as part of an outing.

For a cycling trip, there is the official Route 619 Pazin-Gračišće-Pazin. It is 29.7 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 550 metres and takes 2:30 hours. This makes it easy to distinguish the cycling plan from the shorter walking loop: the distance, elevation gain and duration refer to this route. Which of the two activities is a better fit for your holiday depends on whether you would rather walk the loop or take the designated cycling route.

Historic buildings and urban layout

Gračišće is divided into neighbourhoods, each with its own square and church. This historic urban layout is listed in the Register of Cultural Property. Pod Fumiju, the historic street of artisans, has also retained its original appearance to this day. In the southern part of the town are the ruins of the Brotherhood Church of St. Pangrac, built in the 14th century.

The two-storey Salamon Palace stands by the main gate. Built from carefully hewn local stone, it features Gothic and Renaissance elements. The late Gothic Church of St. Mary na Placu was built in 1425 by Master Dento. The Church of St. Vitus, Modestus and Crescentia houses a 15th-century statue of St. Vitus holding a model of the town. The Church of St. Euphemia dates from 1383; the chapel of St. Anthony preserves a famous 18th-century crucifix from Gračišće.

Various historic details have also survived in the fortifications: sections of the medieval walls remain on the west, north and east sides of the town. The Romanesque town gate is on the west side, and the round Renaissance tower dating from 1500 stands at the eastern corner. The town gate provides access to the loggia, which dates from 1549. These buildings and the town's distinctive layout offer different points of interest if you would like to explore Gračišće mainly for its history and architecture.

Wine and Istrian cuisine

The traditional Izložba vina Gračišće takes place on Easter Monday. Visitors can taste the wines on display at local konobas. The Festival istarskih maneštri celebrates another side of the local cuisine: there, you can try different varieties of Istrian maneštra prepared by cooking teams. Wine tasting and maneštra represent different culinary themes associated with Gračišće. If regional cuisine matters when choosing a holiday destination, these events may be another reason to consider the municipality.
