Municipality of Žminj: Karst landscape, castle and Istrian traditions

Žminj is considered a historic crossroads in central Istria. The municipality’s landscape is shaped by karst terrain, rolling topography and characteristic soils. It is also home to traces of different periods and experiences ranging from a one-hour guided tour to a folk festival. Route 761 and the landscape around Žminj

Route 761 Žminj–Feštini starts beside the tower in Žminj. It passes through the square in front of the parish church of St Michael and through the old town, including along the old stone street “Štradi”. Its stops connect notable places in the centre of Žminj with a route into the surrounding area: the route ends in front of Feštinsko kraljevstvo Cave. As trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before setting out.

The cave is near the village of Feštini and not far from Žminj. Inside, there are safe visitor paths with a total length of about one hundred metres. Notable formations include the “Wizard’s Hat”, the “Tower of Babel” and the “Bat’s Wing”. This makes it possible to combine a visit focused on local history with an experience of the surrounding nature, without treating them as the same attraction.

Castle, chapel and Calvary

Žminj Castle was probably built in the 15th century with a square ground plan. Today, a smaller section of the citadel is visible: one of the four round towers, a wing of the fortification, an outer section of the fortifications and a well-preserved public water cistern dating from 1863. The Chapel of the Holy Trinity stands beside the castle. It was decorated with works of art by an unknown artist in 1471.

Another historic structure is the Calvary in the western part of Žminj, near the road between Pazin and Pula. Built of stone in 1728, it consists of three crosses enclosed by a wall and secured by an iron gate. The castle, chapel and Calvary offer different points of interest if you would like to explore the town’s architectural history.

Guided tour, pasta and Bartulja

The one-hour “Žminjska štuorija” guided tour introduces the history and customs of the people of Žminj, their language, and the town’s sacred and secular architectural heritage. It also includes a tasting of specialities from local producers and a demonstration of how typical pasta such as Makaruni and Fuži is prepared. The tour is seasonal; check before your trip whether it is offered on your dates.

The Istrian Pasta Festival in Žminj also celebrates the region’s pasta-making tradition. Its aims are to preserve and nurture this tradition, promote local pasta varieties and support their producers. Specific programme details may change. Another occasion is Bartulja, a folk festival with a tradition of at least a hundred years, held on the last Saturday in August. It still includes a mass at the Church of St Bartholomew at the entrance to Žminj. If you would like to plan your trip around Bartulja, check the date for that year.

Various exhibitions are held in the tower in Žminj, including exhibitions of handmade nativity scenes, a small tower market and exhibitions about Bartulja. Check the current visitor arrangements before your visit.

For a stay that combines several interests, Žminj offers both historic places and a route through the old town and to the area around the cave.
