Gologorica is situated on a flysch ridge above the fertile valley in the Raša river basin. Deep gorges cut into marl formations shape the landscape around the village. The marl layers are remnants of the muddy seabed of a shallow sea that covered the area approximately 50 million years ago. History and Townscape
Gologorica was first mentioned in 1102. The entrance to the village leads through Vela vrata, which is considered the former main gate. A short alley leads to the square by the De Franceschi House, built in 1711. The Church of All Saints in the cemetery contains a Glagolitic inscription dating from 1549.
Churches and Written Culture
At the entrance to Gologorica stands the Romanesque Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was decorated with Gothic frescoes around 1400.
The parish church of St Peter and St Paul was built in the 17th century on the site of an older church. Gothic reliefs depicting the Crucifixion and the Entombment of Jesus, dating from 1466, have survived from this earlier place of worship. The church is listed as a cultural asset under reference number Z-2477.
Istarski razvod is considered the oldest legal and travel text written in the Glagolitic script.
Tradition and Surroundings
The traditional donkey race “Trka s tovari” was revived in Gologorica in 2009 after being suspended for 17 years.
The Piskovica Cave is located near Gologorica. It is 1,036 metres long.
Getting There
Gologorica can be reached via the road from Cerovlje and Paz through the Rakov potok valley.
