Municipality of Cerovlje: Hills, churches and trails

A hilly landscape, old churches and routes for cycling and hiking shape the Municipality of Cerovlje, northeast of Pazin. Cerovlje is the central settlement of this sprawling municipality. Local history and architecture

Different chapters of local history meet in Draguć: after the former settlement was destroyed by a fire during the Uskok War of 1615 to 1618, it was rebuilt according to a precise plan. The Church of St Elijah is a Romanesque building from the end of the 12th century, constructed from two-coloured stone blocks. The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary in Draguć was added in 1641.

Other places in the municipality also preserve traces of different eras. The Church of the Holy Trinity in Cerovlje dates from the 15th century and contains remnants of frescoes from the time it was built. In Gradinje, the Church of All Saints was built in 1604; it connects the settlements of Gradinje. Frescoes and Glagolitic graffiti lie beneath layers of plaster. The Romanesque Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Gologorica preserves Gothic frescoes painted around 1400 by an unknown artist. The historic village setting also includes Vela vrata, once the main gate of Gologorica, and the De Franceschi House, built in 1711.

Other notable details can be found at churches in smaller places: near Moloni, the Church of St Michael the Archangel has a Romanesque, semicircular sanctuary dating from the 13th century, as well as stone statues of St Michael, the Virgin Mary and St Joseph. The Church of the Holy Spirit near the Borut railway station was restored in 1560, as indicated by a Glagolitic inscription above the entrance. In Pazinski Novaki, the parish Church of St Michael the Archangel dates from the 17th century, while the Church of St Roch there dates from the 15th century.

Hills, trails and glimpses of the region

Grimalda is a viewpoint in central Istria, on a hill 447 metres high. The 13th-century Church of St George also stands there. In Paz, the remains of the castle are visible on the hill above the settlement. The village lies on the route that leads from the Učka Mountains and the Boljun field through the gorges to Pazin. These varied settings offer different focal points for your trip: views and elevation in Grimalda, castle ruins in Paz, or church and local history at other stops.

For cyclists, the Trail of Waterfalls (614) climbs from Pagubice to Cerovlje and then continues towards Pazin. If you are planning a hike, the Path of St Kocijan starts at Borut railway station and is 13 kilometres long. There is also a designated picnic area on Sveti Antun hill above Pagubice. It can be reached via a hiking trail connecting Grdoselo–Zelengrad and Grimalda. The cycling route, the 13-kilometre hiking trail and the picnic area offer different ways to spend time outdoors.

The history of crafts and railways also adds to the picture of the municipality. Bricks were made in Borut for centuries: local people shaped clay from the Borut stream by hand and fired it in field kilns known as “frnaže”. When the railway line from Divača to Pula was built in 1876, Cerovlje gained a pumping station for steam locomotives, which were supplied there with water and coal.

Traditions and trip planning

A traditional carnival takes place in Cerovlje at the beginning of the year, featuring colourful parades of masked groups from central Istria. The annual gathering of bajs players, “Z bajson u Draguć”, is scheduled for the third Sunday in June. In Pagubice, the gathering of traditional musicians, “Nadalinu u pohode”, takes place on 13 June. These events add their own highlights alongside the churches and trails.
