On the Istrian Mountaineering Trail, Veli Mlun is both the endpoint of Stage 2 from Stanica Grožnjan and the starting point of Stage 3. Stage 2, which is approximately 21 km long, is described as easy and takes around 7–8 hours; the final approach to the settlement includes an approximately 1.5 km unmarked continuation. Stage 3 is also described as easy, is around 14.9 km long and takes approximately 6–7 hours.

Routes
From an overnight stop in Veli Mlun, a section of Stage 3 leads north along a gravel road to the Sveti Andrija Church and then to a viewpoint at a reservoir.
Culture
The Sveti Andrija Church stands north of Veli Mlun. It was built in 1787 on the site of an earlier church that had already been mentioned in 1580. A restoration of the church is recorded for 1996.
At the Buzet Local Museum of the Municipality of Buzet, the Old Slavic cemetery of Veli Mlun can be seen among the exhibits on the ground floor.
In the surrounding area lies Zojči brč, also known as Zajčji breg, on the southern slope of Meja in the direction of Veli Mlun. There is a row-grave cemetery from the 7th and 8th centuries, which was used by a mixed Roman-Slavic population. The archaeological site of Zojčiji Brč includes finds from the 7th and 8th centuries, including star-shaped earrings and a silver coin.

The paragliding launch site near Veli Mlun can be reached from Buzet via the Buzet–Istarske toplice road; after 2 km, the route branches off to the right towards Veli Mlun. The launch site is located directly beside the road.
