Routes and landscape

The “631 Barban” trail runs through the hills near Želiski and offers views westwards towards the hills and eastwards towards the Kvarner Sea. A 33-kilometre circular cycling route starts and ends in Barban, crosses forests, cultivated fields, hills and gravel sections, and passes a hill near Želiski on which the Church of Saint Paul stands.

“Walk and Taste Barban” also leads through Želiski: the 13-kilometre route is designed for walking and cycling. It runs through forests, vineyards, pastures and old villages with stone houses.

“Walk and Taste Barban” is promoted as a route for discovering local attractions and the food of the Barban area.

Church and history

The Church of the Holy Apostle Paul stands on Sveti Pavao Hill between Želiski and Bateli. It was built in the 15th century to meet the pastoral needs of Croatian families who had immigrated from Dalmatia. It was renovated at the end of the 19th century and again at the end of the 20th century.

Events

The “#zamislisvojuželju” event has taken place every year since 2023 on 15 August on a hill in Želiski. It is an outdoor event aimed at children, parents and visitors of all generations.

The programme of “#zamislisvojuželju” includes telescope observations of the starry sky with astronomy clubs, creative workshops for children and film screenings under the starry sky.

The local celebration “Fešta na brdu Sv. Pava” is held regularly above Želiski and is associated with the feast of Saints Peter and Paul. Previous programme items have included a football tournament for five-a-side teams and an equestrian performance.
