Šajini: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Culture

The Church of the Holy Apostle Peter in Šajini is traditionally dated to the year 1400. It was consecrated in 1688, extended with a side chapel in 1890, and completely renovated in 2002. It served as the church of the former chaplaincy of St Peter in Šajini, which existed from 1750 to 1988.

The church is associated with the Marian procession of Majnica, held on the last Sunday in May. During the procession, a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary is carried around Šajini.

A thanksgiving mass was held in Šajini to mark the restoration of the Church of St Peter.

Remembrance

The “9 January” Spomen park in Šajini is dedicated to more than 50 civilians who were killed in the fascist attack of 9 January 1944. A monument honouring the victims stands at the centre of the park.

Water is incorporated into the memorial monument, which bears the inscription “Nepresušan izvor nade za budućnost”. Every year, descendants and local officials lay flowers and wreaths at the monument to the victims of Šajini.

The attack on Šajini in 1944 cost 54 residents their lives; the village was looted and burned down.

The memorial room in Šajini can be visited by arrangement with the Šajini local committee. The permanent memorial exhibition space in Šajini is designated as one of only two memorial exhibition or museum sites in southern Istria.

The Route of Mass Casualties of Civilians includes Šajini; the village lies between sites in Pula and Gajana and the village of Bokordići.
