Almost the entire area of the Municipality of Jasenovac lies within Lonjsko polje Nature Park. At the same time, memorial sites and cultural heritage shape the character of the area: the Memorial Museum is central to Jasenovac, while Krapje is known for traditional Posavina architecture. Those wishing to combine nature, history and village culture on one trip will find different points of interest here to consider when planning their holiday.

Memorial Sites in Jasenovac and Uštica

The Flower Memorial in Jasenovac was designed by Bogdan Bogdanović and erected in 1966 on the site of the former Camp III Brickworks. At the Jasenovac Memorial Museum, the permanent exhibition places individual life stories in the context of mass atrocities. It preserves and presents materials about the Jasenovac camp and its prisoners. The museum’s work also includes cooperation with survivors, exhibition and publication projects, and commemorative events in honour of the victims of Jasenovac.

During restoration work, the Memorial Museum remains open to visitors according to its regular opening hours and the procedure for registering groups. Authentic buildings from the Ustaše camp of the Kožara labour group have also been preserved in Jasenovac. Veliki nasip, also known as Nasip smrti, forms the eastern boundary of the Jasenovac memorial area.

Uštica is also a place with a painful history: the village lies between the Sava and Una rivers and was the site of an Ustaše camp for Roma people from 1942 to 1945. The Roma cemetery comprises 21 graves across a total area of 4,292 square metres. These details give the site its own historical significance within the Municipality; it stands alongside the memorial sites in Jasenovac, without equating the different places and their histories.

Krapje: Architecture and Village History

Krapje is a village of architectural heritage and a rural settlement of international significance. Its traditional vernacular buildings are listed in the Register of Cultural Monuments. The Palaić family Ethnological Collection offers a glimpse into the way of life of a typical family in Krapje: more than 170 objects, mainly textiles, wood and ceramics, illustrate clothing, livelihoods, knowledge and skills. Most of the pieces are housed in a traditional two-storey wooden house of Posavina architecture.

Since being recognised as a village of architectural heritage in 1995, Krapje has traditionally held its Architectural Heritage Day every September. This gives your trip planning a special seasonal point of reference: the event is part of the village’s September tradition. Local cuisine was also offered during the European Architectural Heritage Days in Krapje.

On Foot, by Bike or on the Water

The Krapje Visitor Centre offers several starting points for excursions. The Staza graničara hiking trail begins in the centre’s courtyard. The educational programme “Posavski konj” is also available there for groups who have registered in advance. The visitor programme at Lonjsko polje Nature Park also includes birdwatching in the Krapje đol ornithological reserve: for groups of 10 to 20 people, from April to August, and on Saturdays only.

If you prefer to explore the area by bike, you can include the Posavska cycling route in your plans. It is 77.8 kilometres long and passes through Jasenovac and Krapje. For a trip on the water, canoes can be rented at the Krapje Information Centre for a canoe safari on the Veliki Strug canal. The excursion boat Katarina is moored at the landing stage in Jasenovac, below the railway bridge, and has a capacity of 70 people.

These themes offer different points of focus: memorial sites and the museum shape a stay in Jasenovac, traditional architecture and the collection give Krapje its own cultural profile, and the hiking trail, cycling route and water activities add to the nature experiences. When choosing your holiday apartment, consider which of these points of interest matters most for your trip.
