Municipality of Udbina: Landscapes, Sanctuary and History
Accommodation in Municipality of Udbina
The Municipality of Udbina is characterised by an unusual combination of expansive landscapes and significant religious sites. Krbavsko polje lies below the settlement of Udbina, and the remains of the Cathedral of St James are located on its eastern edge. Protected landscapes, old churches and traditional commemorative days also shape the character of the municipality. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider whether your trip will focus mainly on nature and landscapes, cultural discoveries or religious occasions.
Landscapes between Krbavsko polje and Plješevica
Krbavsko polje lies below Udbina and is an important geographical point of reference for several natural sites in the municipality. Both the sinkholes of the Krbavica River and Murtino jezero are located there. Lička Plješevica Nature Park extends across the municipalities of Donji Lapac, Plitvička jezera, Udbina and Gračac. Within the Municipality of Udbina, it covers 220 km²—a considerable share of a protected area that spans several municipal boundaries.
You will encounter a different kind of landscape at Bijeli Potoci–Kamensko. The part within the Municipality of Udbina covers 513 hectares and is protected as a significant landscape; a further 700 hectares lie in the Municipality of Donji Lapac. The entire area is also protected as a Second World War memorial area. Nature and remembrance are therefore part of the same area, while remaining distinct reasons to explore it.
Laudonov Gaj Park Forest lies northwest of Krbavsko polje, near the village of Šalamunić. It covers 33 hectares and is home to around 600 oak trees, approximately 250 years old. The park forest was designated in 1960. The approximate number and age of the trees give the area a tangible historical and landscape dimension, without reducing its character to a single attraction.
The region’s birdlife is another designated nature interest. Sokolovača is identified as a proposed ornithological reserve, with gorges and nesting sites for golden eagles and peregrine falcons. Gola Plješevica is also designated as a proposed ornithological reserve; capercaillie nesting sites are noted there. The two areas therefore represent different named bird species and landscape settings.
Churches and traces of history
The remains of the Bishop’s Cathedral of St James in Udbina date back to the 13th century. Its location on the eastern edge of the settlement of Udbina makes it a prominent historical point of reference. The Catholic Church of St Mark also lies below Udbina. Their different locations and church affiliations help present the municipality’s religious history as more than a single attraction.
The Church of the Croatian Martyrs is the largest church in Udbina and a Croatian National Shrine. The remains of the Church of St Nicholas the Bishop are incorporated into it. Gradina is located above the church: a tower and, probably, a defensive complex dating from the 15th century. At this site, a present-day shrine, the remains of older churches and a historic fortification are explicitly linked by their location.
Other historical sites are spread throughout the municipality. These include the ruins of Kaštel Krbava Castle, the remains of an old Croatian Romanesque church in Podudbina, and the remains of the Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord in Mutilić. If you are interested in history and church art, you can treat these distinct sites as separate themes for your stay rather than grouping them into a single period.
Commemorative days and religious occasions
Croatian Martyrs’ Day is held every year below Udbina on the second Saturday in September. It commemorates martyrs, defenders, those who suffered and victims. Special masses are held at the Church of the Croatian Martyrs on the second Saturday in September and the last Saturday in August, drawing many visitors. These dates are therefore a separate consideration when planning your trip, especially if you would like to learn about religious traditions and commemorative culture.
A traditional gathering of the Serbian community takes place in Mutilić on 19 August, the Day of the Transfiguration of the Lord. This occasion differs in date and focus from the commemorative day below Udbina. Together, the two dates show that religious and community traditions in the municipality take different forms and are associated with different places.
Choosing the right place to stay
Your personal interests can help you choose a holiday apartment: the churches and historical remains appeal to travellers interested in sacred history, while Krbavsko polje, Laudonov Gaj and the designated protected areas represent landscapes and nature. Udbina is situated on the Zagreb–Split main road. This geographical reference helps you orient yourself to the municipality, but on its own it does not indicate the distance between individual attractions or accommodations.
