Karst Landscapes and the Barać Caves

The protected area of the Barać Caves is a karst landscape featuring hornbeam and beech forests, meadows, fields and numerous sinkholes—typical depressions in karst terrain. The caves are therefore part of a natural environment with its own distinctive landforms and habitats above ground, too. The Barać Caves are home to a significant bat colony and several endemic insect species, adding another dimension to the cave world beyond its visible landscape features.

The Upper Barać Cave is 495 metres long. The history of the Barać Caves as a visitor attraction dates back to 1892. The Upper Barać Cave is listed as open to visitors seasonally, from spring to autumn; check the current dates before travelling. Three circular walking trails start and end in the Barać Caves excursion area. This makes it easy to combine the caves with walks through the surrounding area and plan them as part of a day in nature.

Cultural Heritage and Exhibition Spaces

Speleon also explores the region’s nature and history: its permanent exhibition presents the natural and cultural heritage across four areas—speleology, geology, archaeology and palaeontology. The exhibits range from geological and underground topics to archaeological and fossil finds, offering a different perspective on the region from the landscape outside.

Stari grad Drežnik is a registered medieval fortress and protected cultural property in the Municipality of Rakovica. Its round defensive tower is an example of military architecture from the 15th or 16th century. At the same time, the fortress offers visitors an authentic experience of an early Renaissance castle. Those interested in historic architectural forms will find, alongside the permanent exhibition, a specific place where architecture itself takes centre stage.

Cycling Routes and Active Experiences

The Municipality of Rakovica has an organised and marked network of cycling routes. One route with a precise stated length is R31 Rakovica–Oštarski Stanovi–Rakovičko Selište: it is 7.94 kilometres long and starts in the centre of Rakovica. This provides a specific distance for planning, while the rest of the cycling network offers a broader range of options for finding your way around. The main state road also runs through the municipality along the Karlovac–Slunj–Rakovica–Grabovac–Plitvice Lakes route.

Other active pursuits offer a variety of experiences: at Plitvice Adrenaline Park, a 300-metre zipline crosses the gorge of the Korana River. Ogi Adrenaline Park has a ropes course and a giant swing; check current opening arrangements before your visit. A sport climbing site is located above Gajina Cave. Animal Encounters and Local Produce

Ranch Dolina Jelena is an open-air zoo with more than 100 wild animals. Visitors can hand-feed, pet and photograph roe deer and red deer. Due to high demand, visits must be booked several days in advance by email or telephone. After the visit, local specialities, natural juices and spirits made by the Bićanić family and neighbouring family farms are served.
