Udbina: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Gradina, an archaeological site in an elevated, easily defensible location, lies on the northern edge of the hill occupied by present-day Udbina. It served as a control point for the Krbava Field. At its northern entrance, the lower part of a round tower and remains of walls up to two metres high have been preserved. Gradina is considered a medieval settlement and fortress; it was presumably built in response to the Ottoman threat.

Culture and history

The archaeological site of St James Cathedral is located on the eastern edge of the settlement of Udbina. The cathedral was built in the Gothic style, presumably in the last quarter of the 14th century. The cemetery that developed around the older church and St James Cathedral comprises more than 600 excavated graves. From 1185 to 1460, Udbina was the seat of the Diocese of Krbava.

Faith and events

The Church of Croatian Martyrs is Udbina’s largest church and a Croatian national shrine. The shrine grounds include the Park hrvatskih mučenika and a crypt. The recurring special masses at the Church of Croatian Martyrs attract many visitors. The central mass on the last Saturday in August is accompanied by religious and cultural programmes as well as a fair. Around these recurring masses, the Municipality of Udbina organises religious and cultural programmes.

Landscape and activities

Udbina has a mountain bike circuit through the Međugorje Plateau and the Sarajevo Valley. The route passes through forests, groves and meadows and includes sections on gravel roads and single trails, as well as challenging ascents and descents. A second route climbs to an altitude of 1,550 metres. An optional 30-minute walk leads to the summit of Ozeblin in the Plješevica range; along the way, there are views towards Lika, the Una Gorge, Velebit, Dinara and western Bosnia.
