Churches and History in Tuhelj
The Parish Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a cultural monument of the highest category. According to the parish records, it was built between 1350 and 1390. The single-nave building is Late Gothic, while its bell tower is Late Baroque. Individual details give the church its distinctive character: the wrought-iron entrance door dates from 1805 and is decorated with a bronze crucifix created by Croatian sculptor Antun Augustinčić in 1942.
A grotto dedicated to the Marian apparition was built beside the church in 2008. The Stations of the Cross between the church and the parish house were restored in 2015. Above Tuhelj’s old cemetery stands Kapela svetog Josipa, first mentioned in 1727. In Tuheljske Toplice, information boards from the “Zagorske priče” project feature QR codes that provide access to multimedia content.
