The Ž-2196, formerly known as the Zagorska magistrala, runs along the Krapina Valley. Important state roads also pass through the valley in the municipality. East of the municipality runs the Zagreb–Macelj motorway (E-59), part of the international Pyhrn corridor. These are distinct reference points: the Ž-2196 follows the valley, while the motorway lies east of the municipality.
Church and Cultural History
The parish church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Seven Sorrows in Veliko Trgovišće was built between 1838 and 1876. The single-nave building has neoclassical features; inside, it is decorated with scenes from the life of Christ. Its architecture and imagery give the church two distinct aspects: the building’s clean form and the religious depictions in its interior.
More recent cultural history is also present in the local landscape. The restored birthplace of Franjo Tuđman stands at the entrance to Veliko Trgovišće. The Spomen škola „dr. Franjo Tuđman“ houses a museum, a library and a reading room. In May 2024, the dr. Franjo Tuđman Cultural Centre also opened, hosting numerous music, film, literature and gallery programmes. The church, memorial sites and cultural centre thus offer different ways to engage with history and cultural life.
A prehistoric necropolis with earthen burial mounds lies in the wider area of Veliko Trgovišće. The tumuli measure 30 to 60 metres in diameter and 6 to 12 metres in height; the site is among the largest of its kind discovered to date in northern Croatia. They have not yet been investigated. The necropolis therefore brings a much older time horizon to local cultural history than the church and memorial sites.
Circular Route, Fishpond and Wine Tradition
For a cycling trip through Veliko Trgovišće and its surroundings, the “Toma Gajdek” route is an easy circular route. Check route conditions before cycling. The Jezero fishpond is managed by the Jezero Sport Fishing Association of Veliko Trgovišće. The route and the fishpond are distinct local attractions: the circular route can be considered an activity, while the fishpond’s management reflects its connection to local sport fishing.
The Zagorska Wine Road passes through the municipality. Grape and wine festivals are traditionally held here several times a year, and guests are welcome. Check the dates of the respective festivals before travelling. The Škalec rural tourism business offers Welsh Riesling, Rhine Riesling, Sauvignon and blended white wine for tasting; availability may vary. The wine road, festivals and tastings give the wine tradition different forms, without requiring any one occasion to shape your stay.

Marija Bistrica is Croatia’s largest national Marian pilgrimage site and has a long tradition of religious tourism. These regional examples complement the picture of the municipality but are not features of the Municipality of Veliko Trgovišće.
