Drnje has preserved buildings from different periods. A salt warehouse dating from 1789 is now used by the football club. The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built in 1846 to standard plans for churches in the Military Frontier. It is part of a complex comprising the parish church and rectory, dating from the first half of the 19th century. A monument to King Tomislav stands in the centre, erected to mark the thousandth anniversary of the Croatian Kingdom. A monument to Franjo Mraz stands in front of the school.
Local traditions and literary history also give Drnje its distinctive character. “Drnjansko Đurđevo” is a traditional event; its 24th edition was held at the Drnje event venue. Historically, it is linked to the veneration of Saint George as the town and parish’s ancient patron saint. The Drnjanska pjesmarica, compiled by Juraj Ščrbačić in 1687, is one of the oldest and most significant hymnbooks in Kajkavian literature. Torčec: rural architecture and archaeological traces
Torčec has a complex of corn granaries whose layout is characteristic of this part of Pannonia. A mill from the early 20th century and a chapel from the first half of the 19th century add to the settlement’s historic character. At the Torčec-Cirkvišče archaeological site, a ritual find unique in Croatia was discovered: the head of a dog, buried in a vessel, dating from around the mid-13th century. Archaeological investigations confirmed the site’s presumed sacred character. They also yielded clues that helped locate the Church of St Stephen the King, mentioned in a 1334 register of the Diocese of Zagreb. Torčec’s history thus ranges from preserved rural architecture to medieval traces.
Routes and getting around
The transport routes also reflect the municipality’s location. The Rijeka–Zagreb–Koprivnica–Drnje–Botovo–Zakany–Budapest railway line opened on the stretch near Drnje in 1870. Drnje railway station was built during construction of the railway; Botovo station opened later. An international road runs from Koprivnica through Drnje and Gola and continues into Hungary. Its importance grew after the international border crossing near Gola opened in 1982. A regional road connects Međimurje with Drnje via Đelekovec and Torčec, then continues through Sigetec and Hlebine to Novigrad Podravski, where it joins the Podravina highway. A local road also connects Torčec with Koprivnica.
