Architectural History and Museums

The Lyuben Karavelov Regional Library is housed in a building constructed in 1911 for Bulgaria’s first Chamber of Commerce and Industry. It is a cultural monument of local significance. The building therefore tells of a specific chapter in the city’s history and connects a cultural institution with Bulgaria’s early commercial and industrial history.

The Ruse Regional Historical Museum opened in January 1902 as a museum collection at the Prince Boris I Boys’ High School. Today, it holds 130,000 cultural artefacts. It features nine exhibitions, three of them outdoors; the composition of the exhibitions may change. The history and scale of the collection offer a different perspective on the past from the library’s architecture: here, an extensive collection takes centre stage, while there, it is a single building and its original purpose.

Stages, a Church and Roman Traces

The Ruse State Opera was founded in 1949; its first performance was Verdi’s “La Traviata”. It received the Crystal Lyre award in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2012 and 2014. The puppet theatre complements this performing arts scene with modern puppet shows for children, families and adults. It is therefore a cultural attraction explicitly aimed at all generations, while the opera, with its founding history and the awards listed, showcases a different side of cultural life.

Other notable historic sites include the Pantheon of the National Revival Heroes, a national ossuary where 39 prominent Bulgarians are buried. The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity is the oldest church in Ruse and was built in 1632. The Roman fortress “Sexaginta Prista”, meanwhile, is presented as an open-air museum, which is part of its character. Only the Kyunt Kapu gate, with its iron-clad door, remains of the Ruse Fortress. These three places represent different ways of making history visible: as a memorial, an old church and an open-air museum with a surviving gate.

Squares and Parks as Points of Reference

The city walking route passes through Svoboda and Batenberg Squares. Twelve streets meet at Svoboda Square, making it a specific point of reference in the city layout. Youth Park offers opportunities for walking, relaxing and children’s play, while also conveying the city’s history and past. For families who want to alternate between culture and activity, it is a useful addition to the museums and theatres.

The National Transport Museum lies below Youth Park, on the banks of the Danube, and features three museum exhibitions. Its location adds another specific riverside destination to the city’s points of reference. Lipnik Forest Park near Nikolovo

Lipnik Forest Park is located in the area of the village of Nikolovo, ten kilometres east of Ruse. This location sets Lipnik apart from the squares and cultural attractions in the city and makes the distance a useful detail for planning.
