The municipality of Ivanovo brings together rock-cut architecture, a gorge landscape and village culture. Particularly striking are the rock churches near the village of Ivanovo, the riverside cliffs near Bozhichen and archaeological sites such as Cherven Fortress. Local folklore and an ancient elm in Nisovo are also part of the picture. This offers several distinct interests for a trip: art and history, nature and outdoor activities, and regional traditions. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can start by considering which of these themes you would like to shape your stay.

Nature Park and Trails near Nisovo

Rusenski Lom Nature Park covers parts of the areas of Svalenik, Shtraklevo, Nisovo, Cherven and Koshov in the municipality of Ivanovo. It also includes the village of Pisanets in the municipality of Vetovo, Ruse Province. Near Nisovo stands an elm tree about 700 years old, believed to date from the time of the Second Bulgarian Empire. The age is approximate, and its historical attribution is also presented as a belief. In the Nisovo area, the Rusenski Lom Nature Park Directorate has marked three hiking trails. Here, a direct connection with nature and a historical tradition meet clearly signposted opportunities for hiking.

Rock Art, Churches and Early History

The rock churches of Ivanovo developed near the village of Ivanovo as a complex of churches, chapels, monasteries and cells carved into the rock. The 14th-century wall paintings testify to the exceptional skill of the artists of the Tarnovo School of Painting. This makes the site a special destination for anyone interested in medieval art and religious architecture.

You can encounter another historical period in Tabachka: the Church of the “Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God” was built in 1862. It has 82 icons by masters of the Trevna School and houses a museum with liturgical books donated by the Russian Tsar’s family. Prehistoric finds dating to 4300 BC were discovered in Vodna Cave near Tabachka. Together, the church, icons and cave finds span a long period—from prehistory to 19th-century art. In Koshov, the Gramovets rock monastery complex is one of the archaeological attractions.

Cherven: Fortress and Historic Trail

The medieval town fortress of Cherven lies in Rusenski Lom Nature Park and is an archaeological reserve. A 2 km historic trail begins at the car park in front of the fortress in the village of Cherven. Steps lead to the fortress entrance; along the way, you can see niches carved into the rocks for saltpetre extraction. A guide from the Regional Historical Museum in Ruse is permanently stationed at the fortress. The trail combines a clearly marked route with insights into the history and use of the rocky terrain.

Gorge Landscapes and Local Traditions

Bozhichen lies beside a picturesque stretch of the Cherni Lom River gorge. Numerous rock formations and caves define the village, which is considered a natural attraction. The riverside cliffs also contain caves and cells. One of them is called “Tsarkvata” and has preserved remnants of frescoes.

Koshov’s culture offers another distinct focus: the village has a women’s folklore group with 12 members and a 20-member amateur men’s ensemble. The old ritual “Dzhamal” is also reenacted. Nature and outdoor activities offer one kind of trip, with the gorge and hiking trails as possible focal points; rock art, the fortress and folklore provide cultural and historical interests. The themes that interest you most can help you choose your holiday apartment and the kind of vacation you want.
