Orlova Chuka: Cave Passages, Bats and Rock Climbing
Orlova Chuka lies 11 km east of Dve Mogili and 3 km north of Pepelina. With more than 13,500 metres of cave passages, it is Bulgaria’s second-longest cave after Duhlata Cave. This makes the cave a prominent destination for anyone interested in the underground landscape.
The cave is home to around 10,000 bats of various species, all of which are protected. Its cultural and historical significance is also recognised: since 1978, Orlova Chuka has been an archaeological monument of national cultural and historical significance. Rock-climbing and orienteering competitions are traditionally held in the cave area. The natural environment, bat conservation and these sporting traditions provide different ways to explore the cave area.
Shirokovo Kale at the Confluence of Two Rivers
The archaeological site of Shirokovo Kale offers a different glimpse into the past. It lies on the edge of the village of the same name, on a naturally protected rocky promontory at the confluence of the Baniski Lom and Cherni Lom rivers. The promontory and the confluence shape the site’s particular setting.
Archaeological excavations uncovered a metallurgical workshop there that operated from the late 6th to the early 7th century. Tourists visit the excavations, which attract considerable interest. Those interested in the history of early craft activity will find a different focus here from Orlova Chuka’s natural and cave history.
St. Marina Monastery and the Municipality’s Traditions
The St. Marina Monastery is located near Karan Varbovka and is one of the older Bulgarian monasteries founded during the Second Bulgarian Empire (1187–1396). The monastery church was built in 1890. The monastery’s foundation and the church’s construction date refer to different periods in its history.
The “Living Water” folklore festival is held every June in the monastery area. In Karan Varbovka, the Ayazmoto Forest Park covers 3,483 decares of woodland. The Ayazmoto spring is also located there; it is considered to have healing properties and attracts hundreds of tourists from all over Bulgaria every year. These local features bring the forest, spring and regional folklore into focus without presenting them as a single offering.
In Katselovo, the Harts gathering takes place in August on the occasion of the Dormition of the Mother of God. It is a family gathering of the Harts ethnographic group. Another historical connection can be found in Dve Mogili: Filip Totyu is buried in a churchyard.
