Culture and History

The birthplace of Vasil Levski was built during the early Bulgarian National Revival in the 18th century. It was reconstructed in 1933 and opened to visitors in 1937.

The Karlovo Historical Museum is housed in a former five-grade boys' school, built in 1871 within the historic area of “Starinno Karlovo”. It preserves cultural objects from prehistory, antiquity, the Middle Ages, the Bulgarian National Revival, and the modern era.

The Mazakov House houses an ethnographic exhibition on urban life in Karlovo in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The individual rooms are arranged thematically and furnished with original objects from the museum's ethnographic collection. The exhibition also showcases the traditional kitchen of a Karlovo household, centered around a hearth, and presents the making of Kalofer or Brussels lace as a popular activity among women in Karlovo.

The Karlovo Rose Festival begins with the traditional rose-picking ritual in rose gardens near the town. The festival includes folklore ensembles and performances in traditional clothing.

The “Starinno Karlovo” ethnographic complex comprises five restored Karlovo buildings of considerable historic and aesthetic value. Each house offers attractions and demonstrations in which visitors can take part.

Landscapes and Trails

The Suchurum Waterfall is 15 metres high and lies 1 kilometre north of the centre of Karlovo. The Karlovo–Vasil Levski Hut route runs north of Karlovo through vineyards.
