Karlovo combines historic houses and museums with a nature experience at Suchurum Waterfall. Kalofer is another interesting destination in the region: there, the memory of Hristo Botev, traditional crafts and a landscape in the Balkan Mountains take centre stage. Historic sites and a waterfall in Karlovo
The “Starinno Karlovo” ethnographic complex comprises five restored and adapted historic buildings. Each house offers attractions and demonstrations that visitors can take part in themselves. This means a visit need not be limited to viewing the buildings: the activities invite you to engage actively with the traditions on display.
The Vasil Levski National Museum is located in the centre of Karlovo. It comprises his birth house, the “Vsyah Svetih Bolgarskih” (All Saints of Bulgaria) memorial chapel, the Chardaklieva House, a museum exhibition and the monument to Gina Kuncheva, Levski’s mother. Tours are available in Bulgarian and English; visits are paid and possible year-round.
The “Sveta Bogoroditsa” Church also tells the story of the town: built in 1851, it has a mural depicting the ordination of Deacon Ignatius as a hierodeacon. St Nicholas Church is an architectural monument of the Bulgarian National Revival. Both churches complement the museums with further historic and religious sights.
Suchurum Waterfall offers a change of scenery in nature. It is 15 metres high and lies 1 kilometre north of Karlovo’s centre. A walk along Vodopad Street leads there. Kalofer: museums, crafts and the Balkan Mountains
The Hristo Botev National Museum in Kalofer comprises a memorial house museum, an exhibition hall and two monuments: one to Hristo Botev and one to Ivanka Boteva, the poet’s mother. A visit to the museum also includes the Daskal Botev schoolhouse. It is managed by National Museum staff and follows the museum’s opening hours. Patriotism lessons are offered in the mutual school’s classroom by prior arrangement.
Attractions in Kalofer also include workshop visits where you can see how the well-known Kalofer lace is made, as well as how traditional rural carpets and woollen rugs are woven. Alongside the historic sites, these offer an insight into craft techniques.
About 7 kilometres north of Kalofer, the men’s monastery of the Holy Nativity of the Mother of God stands in a picturesque valley on the banks of the Byala, surrounded by the hills of the Balkan Mountains. About 200 metres beyond the monastery are the entrance to Central Balkan National Park and the Byala Reka complex; the Byala Reka eco-trail is also nearby. This part of the region brings together religious history and a landscape shaped by the river and mountain foothills.
The Rose Festival and mineral water in Banya
The Rose Festival in Karlovo begins with a rose-harvesting ritual featuring folklore groups. It includes bagpipe music, traditional costumes, ceremonial breads, roses and Kukeri dances. The festival also features a demonstration of rose distillation and the serving of rose products to guests. If you are interested in traditions and regional culture, this offers a different experience from the museums or workshops.
Banya is a spa town in Karlovo Municipality, situated in the fertile Karlovo Basin. Its mineral water is hyperthermal, with a temperature of 42 °C.
