Danube Islands and Bird Habitats

The “Ibisha” nature reserve is located in the area of the village of Dolni Tsibar, in the eastern part of Tsibar Island in the Danube. It covers 34.3 hectares and protects typical Danube island communities: floodplain forests and wetlands, as well as refuges for rare and endangered plant and animal species. If you are interested in nature conservation, it offers a practical insight into the habitats of the river islands.

The “Tsibar Island” protected area, covering 101.48 hectares, is separate from it. It includes the part of Tsibar Island in the Danube in the area of Dolni Tsibar that is not part of the “Ibisha” nature reserve, as well as two smaller downstream islands in the area of Gorni Tsibar. The two protected areas therefore have different sizes and clearly defined boundaries. The “Tsibar Islands” protected landscape also preserves habitats used by protected bird species for breeding and wintering, and as a stopover during migration.

Another large protected area is the Natura 2000 “Zlatiata” bird protection area, code BG0002009. It covers 434,987.345 decares and includes Valchedram and the villages of Bazovets, Gorni Tsibar, Zlatia and Razgrad. The protected area serves to conserve and maintain the habitats of protected bird species and, where necessary, restore them. The many named areas make nature and birdlife a distinct focus for a stay in the municipality.

Cultural History and Living Traditions

Valchedram is home to the Church of “Sveta Paraskeva”. It is a scaled-down model of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and is known for its unique iconostasis. If you are interested in church art and architecture, you can combine a visit here with a visit to the Valchedram museum collection, founded in 1960. In 1992, the municipal administration made the former bathhouse building available for the collection.

The Ancient Fortress of Cebrus in Dolni Tsibar also gives the municipality an archaeological dimension. It is listed as an immovable archaeological cultural monument of national importance. It is also part of the serial property “Frontiers of the Roman Empire – Danube Limes in Bulgaria”, which is on Bulgaria’s Tentative List for UNESCO. The municipality thus offers both religious cultural heritage and a monument connected to the Roman Danube Limes.

Distinctive folklore traditions, customs, songs and legends are performed in the municipality by dance ensembles and amateur folklore groups. One example is a folklore group from Zlatia: in its current form, it was founded in 2010 to revive an authentic ritual that has been practised in the village for centuries. The two-day “Songs and Dances from Zlatia” folklore festival ends with a concert on 14 October.

The “Sharena Trapeza” competition, organised by the “Ralo-1891” cultural centre, is part of the region’s culinary culture. Cooks compete in three categories: Bulgarian national dishes, original creations and desserts. This means that local culture encompasses not only music and rituals, but also culinary traditions maintained by the community.
