Almus and the Historical Museum

Almus comprises an early and a late Roman fort, an early Byzantine fortified settlement, and an associated necropolis in Lom, Lom Municipality. As an immovable archaeological cultural heritage site of national importance, it brings together evidence from several periods. This sequence in time gives the study of the past a concrete structure: the Roman forts can be distinguished from the later fortified settlement, while the necropolis forms another part of the complex.

The Historical Museum also brings together a range of topics. It was founded on 20 September 1925 as the local archaeological society “Almus.” Its departments cover archaeology, Bulgaria in the 15th to 19th centuries, modern history, ethnography and art. Churches and architectural heritage

The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is the largest church in Lom, with a long history of construction. Work began in 1863, and the church was completed between 1894 and 1897; it was solemnly consecrated in the summer of 1906. It has been designated an architectural cultural monument since 1974. The Church of St. Nikola Stari, also known as Borunskata Tsarkva, has a different timeline: it was restored in 1885 and has been designated a cultural monument since 1975. The broader architectural picture extends beyond individual churches. Lom Municipality has 57 buildings designated as architectural cultural monuments. They were built between 1880 and 1940, and were designed by architects from Austria, Belgium, Germany and Hungary. Their architectural styles include late Art Nouveau and Neo-Baroque. This broadens the focus from individual buildings to the building stock across the municipality and its range of design influences. Watchtower and more recent cultural history

The watchtower in Lom offers another aspect of the town’s history. Built in 1879, it is considered the first tower of its kind in Bulgaria and houses a museum dedicated to the history of firefighting. In September 2025, Lom also hosted the 18th national amateur theatre festival in honour of Krastyo Pishurka, with international participation from Italy. This event adds a specific example from more recent event history to the town’s architectural and museum history.

Getting there and choosing accommodation

The II-11 road between Vidin, Lom and Kozloduy, as well as the E-79 between Lom, Montana and Sofia, pass through Lom Municipality. The municipality also has 12 kilometres of electrified railway line, and Lom station has 17 tracks. These details distinguish road connections from rail infrastructure.
