Montana: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
On the southwestern outskirts of the city stands the Ancient Fortress of Montana on the elevation known as Kaleto or Gradishte, approximately 40 metres above the city. From Kaleto Hill, views extend across Montana and the Ogosta Reservoir. Montana lies on the Ogosta River in a foothill basin north of the Balkan Mountains, bounded by the Păstrina and Montansko Bardo uplands.
Culture and History
The Regional Historical Museum Montana preserves more than 60,000 movable cultural objects dating from the Chalcolithic period to the early 21st century. The exhibitions are housed in three main buildings. The museum also offers guided tours of the ancient and medieval Kaleto Fortress.
Archaeological excavations at the Ancient Fortress of Montana uncovered a gate with a tower representing a fortification structure from the 3rd to 4th centuries. Below the fortress, at a large spring, is an ancient rock sanctuary that was associated with Diana and Apollo during the Roman period. Montana's municipal cultural offerings also include an International Folklore Festival.
Nature and Activities
The Ogosta Reservoir south of Montana is associated with recreation, sports, water tourism and fishing. There are leisure facilities and restaurants in the reservoir area. Regular bus services are reported for this area.
The walk around Montanenzium Lake is described as one of the easiest walks in Montana. An easy walk from the centre of Montana to Kaleto is also described as a route with views.
The Lopushanski Monastery is located 22 kilometres west of Montana. It has an on-site restaurant offering accommodation; there are forest walks nearby.
