Geographical Setting

Lom is situated on the Danube at the mouth of the Lom River. The ancient city of Almus is located on the Danube north of Lom.

Culture

Almus is designated as a cultural monument of national importance. The Historical Museum in Lom was founded on 20 September 1925 as the Almus Archaeological Society. Its departments cover archaeology, Bulgarian history from the 15th to the 19th century, modern history, ethnography and art.

The Boruna Church of Saint Nicholas is a protected cultural monument and was restored in 1885. It contains icons associated with painters from the Debar art school; its local history as a religious school dates back to 1760. The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is Lom's largest church and has been an architectural cultural monument since 1974. The Church of Saint Nicholas was approved in 1832 and built from hewn stone.

Lom's fire watchtower houses a fire brigade museum. The “Postoyanstvo 1856” community centre in Lom was founded in 1856 and is associated with early Bulgarian theatre and music, library work, folklore and the “Krastyo Pishurka” Drama Theatre, which has staged nearly 500 plays. Lom's historic newspaper kiosk was restored in 2018; historians consider it Bulgaria's oldest newspaper kiosk.

City Life

The Port of Lom is connected to Bulgaria's national railway and road network. A tourist cultural information centre is located on the banks of the Danube in the Boruna district of the city.

Leisure

Lom's Danube Park has new facilities for children of various age groups, offering opportunities for physical activities outdoors. It also has designated open areas with benches, waste bins and a new surface.

The traditional Trifon Zarezan festival in the Sadovete area includes pruning the vines, electing a Wine King and a competition for the best white and red wine. During Trifon Zarezan, a tasting of the area's best homemade wines takes place at the Okopa pavilion in Sadovete. An annual solo exhibition by a local artist or an artist associated with the city is held around Lom's city celebration on 17 September.

The Dobridol Monastery of the Holy Trinity is situated in a scenic location on a small hill amid the surrounding ravines.
