The Museum of Folk Crafts and Applied Arts in Troyan traces the development of local ceramics from the Ceramic Neolithic to the Bulgarian National Revival. It also documents the development of the Troyan School of Ceramics. Alongside finished craft products, the exhibits cover tools, moulds, uses and various decorative techniques. This gives you insight not only into the design, but also into how the pieces were made and used. The museum also offers visits to a pottery workshop and demonstrations of icon painting and woodcarving.

In Oreshak, the National Exhibition of Arts and Crafts displays folk art objects made by renowned masters from all of Bulgaria’s ethnographic regions. Visitors can try regional crafts such as pottery, woodcarving, pyrography and weaving. Those interested in hands-on insights into traditional crafts will find a different approach here from the exhibition in Troyan, which focuses on the development of ceramics.

Near Oreshak, on the banks of the Cherni Osam River, stands the Troyan Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It is considered the largest monastery in the Balkan Mountains and Bulgaria’s third-largest spiritual centre. The monastery church features frescoes by the artist Zahari Zograf, dating from the Bulgarian National Revival. A visit to the monastery thus offers another cultural focus alongside the collections on crafts and ceramics.

Roman History and Nature in the Balkan Mountains

The ancient Via Trayana is also part of the municipality’s history: the road runs through Troyan Municipality and connected Lower Moesia with Thrace. Sostra was the sixth road station along this route. Alongside the Roman Fortress of Sostra, there is a paved road and a car park. The site adds a Roman dimension to the monastery and craft attractions.

The Steneto Biosphere Reserve lies within the municipality and forms part of Central Balkan National Park. Natural attractions open to visitors include the Raychova Dupka, Ptichata Dupka and Kumanitsa caves, the Markova Dupka rock arch, and the waterfalls at Cher nokozhi and Konski Dol. Hiking Trails and Warm Mineral Springs

Several trails lead from Chiflik into Central Balkan National Park and to the Kozya Stena Reserve. One described route starts with a 3.5 km paved road to the Haydushka Pesenn hut, then follows a marked hiking trail to the Kozya Stena hut, a journey of 2 hours and 30 minutes. Another mountain route runs from the Smesite area near Cherni Osam to the Ambaritsa hut; it takes 3 hours and requires good mountaineering preparation. Warm mineral springs are another feature of the municipality: they can be found in Shipkovo and Chiflik. Chiflik has several warm mineral springs with temperatures of up to 55°C.

A local culinary highlight is the annual “Chukan Bob s Kopriva i Horo se Izviva” festival in Cherni Osam. It brings together the regional dish of beans with nettles, music and dancing.
