Elhovo: Nature Areas, Traditions and History
Accommodation in Elhovo
Elhovo combines protected nature with insights into regional ways of life and historic sites. The municipality has two nature reserves, one natural landmark and seven protected areas. When planning your trip, it is worth looking at their different features and locations: some nature and cultural attractions are in the town of Elhovo, while others are in villages within the municipality.

Riparian Forests and Protected Habitats
The 76.98-hectare Balabana Nature Reserve is located in the town of Elhovo. It encompasses habitats for various heron species as well as lowland riparian forests. Anyone interested in river landscapes and birdlife will find a distinct natural attraction here within the town. The 467.47-hectare Dolna Topchia Nature Reserve, by contrast, is in the village of Trankowo. It is characterized by riparian forest and provides a habitat for the Common Pheasant.
Other protected areas differ in both size and what they protect. The Dranchi Dupka natural landmark covers five hectares and is located in the village of Melnitsa; it protects a cave. The 1,891.21-hectare Tundzha River Gorge protected area is in Lesovo. It protects the habitats of 149 bird species, eight amphibian species and 21 reptile species.
The Tundzha River 2 habitat protection area includes parts of the town of Elhovo and the villages of Boyanovo, Granitovo, Izgrev, Kirilovo and Trankowo. It covers a total area of 5,948.72 hectares. The Dervent Heights bird protection area includes, among other places in the municipality, the village of Lalkovo and provides habitats for various heron species as well as lowland riparian forests. The Sakar habitat protection area protects native plant and animal species, including the Common Pheasant. These different protected areas make nature an important part of a trip around the municipality.
Museum, Customs and Historic Sites
The Ethnographic and Archaeological Museum is in the center of Elhovo. It is housed in two two-storey buildings, constructed in 1933 and connected in the 1960s. The first exhibition hall presents the livelihoods and crafts of the local population from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Topics include farming, viticulture, tobacco growing, animal husbandry, hunting and fishing, as well as coppersmithing and tailoring. A visit to the museum offers an introduction to various forms of work and everyday life from that period.
The fourth exhibition hall offers a different perspective: it is devoted to festivals and customs, including weddings, Lazaruvane and Koledari traditions. The Ethnographic Museum in Elhovo is one of Bulgaria’s 100 National Tourist Sites. If you want to include both nature and culture in your trip, you can give these themes different priority when choosing places to visit.
Historic attractions can also be found outside the museum. In the area of the village of Stroyno is the Manastircheto–St. Iliya architectural complex, with a temple tholos from the Roman period. The late antique and medieval Gradishte Fortress is in the village of Melnitsa. These two sites have different historical contexts, so they should be considered as separate destinations rather than as one location.
Places to Consider When Planning Your Trip
When choosing a holiday apartment, it helps to match your interests to the place names mentioned above. The museum and Balabana Nature Reserve are in the town of Elhovo; the other nature and historical attractions described here are in the villages of Trankowo, Lesovo, Melnitsa and Stroyno. If these attractions shape your trip, include their respective locations when comparing possible places to stay, rather than treating the municipality as a single destination for excursions.
Local traditions are also part of Elhovo’s character: the Banitsa Festival in Elhovo was held for the thirteenth consecutive time. Along with the museum’s exhibits on crafts and customs, it adds a culinary and local dimension to the nature and history themes.
