Hotalich is located 4 km northwest of Sevlievo, on the western edge of the Sevlievo Mountains, where the Rositsa enters a picturesque gorge. The site is an immovable cultural monument of national importance and has been one of Bulgaria’s 100 national tourist sites since 2024.

Culture and History

Hotalich is an open-air museum for visitors. The archaeological complex comprises four Christian churches, while the excavated medieval settlement contains almost 90 residential and farm buildings.

The Clock Tower of Sevlievo is the oldest surviving public building in the town and an architectural cultural monument. The Hadjistoyanovo School was one of the first Bulgarian secular schools and now houses the permanent exhibitions “Archaeology” and “Sevlievo during the Bulgarian National Revival”.

The Historical Museum in Sevlievo has a collection of more than 50,000 objects, including documents, photographs, archaeological finds and works of art. The Dandolovi Houses display traditional costumes from the Sevlievo area, urban furniture and the clothing of wealthy Sevlievo families.

The Sevlievo Tourist Information Centre is located near the central square and provides information about attractions, dining, accommodation, transport and current events.

Getting Around

Routes south of Sevlievo can reach the main ridge of the Balkan Mountains after crossing parts of the Fore-Balkan. A mountain bike route can start in Sevlievo and pass through nearby villages; optional detours lead to Mari Skok Waterfall and to a viewpoint towards the Alexander Stamboliyski Reservoir.

The Sevlievo Pumpkin Festival includes culinary competitions as well as competitions for culinary creations based on pumpkins.
