Kavarna is a municipality with 42 kilometres of coastline. Between beaches, bird migration areas and historic sites, it offers a variety of ways to plan your trip: you can explore coastal landscapes, take an interest in nature watching or focus on cultural history. Which holiday apartment in Kavarna is right for your vacation also depends on which of these themes matter most to you.

Coast and views at Bolata

The beaches in Kavarna Municipality have a combined area of 74,000 square metres. Bolata is the only sandy beach in the Kaliakra area. This makes it a special destination for anyone who values sandy shores. If you include Bolata in your excursion plans, you should also take the route to the cliff edge into account: a steep path leads north to the top of the cliff. From there, you can enjoy a sweeping view over the ravine.

The path and the view give the visit its own focus alongside time spent at the beach. If you are travelling with children, you can factor the steep climb into your day's plans. The figures for the beaches refer to the entire municipality; Bolata's special status applies to the Kaliakra area.

Birdlife and early history

Yaylata brings together nature and traces of early settlement. Its cave settlement comprises 101 dwellings, which were already inhabited in the 5th millennium BC. The wildlife also makes the site noteworthy: more than 178 bird species breed there or pass through on their way to wintering grounds along the African coast. More than 270 animal species have also been recorded in Yaylata. Anyone interested in nature and archaeology will find two distinct subjects at this named site.

Another natural area is Taukliman, which is connected to the Via Pontica bird migration route. Every spring, flocks of thousands of gulls, geese, waders, plovers and other birds stop there. Taukliman is also home to the caves Goliamata Maara, Temnata Dupka, the Aragonite Cave and Iglenoto Uho. Birdwatching and the caves are distinct features of the same area.

Cultural sites and historical landmarks

The Ethnographic Complex of Kavarna brings together several elements: a house museum, a restored shoemaker's workshop, a lace-making workshop and a courtyard area. The complex presents characteristic cultural features of the Dobrudzhan, Gagauz and Kotlenzi communities. The workshops and house museum give the subject concrete form; the presentation is not limited to a single craft or community.

Kavarna's churches also have different dates: the Church of St George was built in 1836, and the Church of the Assumption of Mary in 1860. At Cape Chirakman there is a restored fortress wall of interest to tourists. A basilica from the same period was also unearthed there. For a trip focused on historic buildings and archaeological evidence, these offer several distinct aspects of the area's history.

The cave museum at Cape Kaliakra displays archaeological finds from excavations in the reserve, as well as a model of the ancient fortress. During the active tourist season, guided tours or explanations by a guide are available there. The exhibition combines artefacts with a model of the fortress; information about seasonal guided tours is especially useful for visitors who prefer to have the history explained rather than focus solely on the exhibits.

Festivals and activities near Kamen Bryag

At Kavarna's Mussel and Fish Festival, public cooking demonstrations and tastings of mussels, Black Sea fish and other seafood took place in 2026. The traditional festival is being held for the 23rd time by Kavarna Municipality. The Kavarna Rock Fest began in 2006; this year marks its start. The two events appeal to different cultural interests, from regional food to music.

Near Kamen Bryag, there are challenging, hard-to-access climbing routes used by sport climbers. Also near Kamen Bryag is Ogancheto: a gas flame from a metal pipe that is considered to burn continuously. Families exploring Kavarna can choose between nature watching, historic sites and events without treating the different demands of these activities as equivalent.
