Kavarna: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Kavarna is situated on a rocky coast in the northern part of Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast. The coastline stretches for 42 km across the municipality; its total beach area is 74,000 square metres. Those wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Kavarna can then continue their search for accommodation.

Coast and History

Around 3 km south of Kavarna lies Cape Chirakman, with the remains of the ancient Thracian-Greek colony of Bizone, a restored 4th-century defensive wall and an excavated basilica. The cape is a visitor attraction. Cape Kaliakra and its archaeological reserve are located 12 km southeast of Kavarna. The rocky peninsula extends approximately 2 km into the sea and is known for its preserved natural surroundings and panoramic views over the coast. The site includes a museum exhibition, a visitor centre, a fortified access road, parking areas and signage.

Culture

The “Dobrudzha and the Sea” exhibition displays stone anchors and amphorae recovered during underwater archaeology expeditions. It also illustrates ancient navigation in the northern Black Sea using copies of ancient and medieval maps and is housed in a restored late-medieval hammam.

The Ethnographic Complex in Kavarna was opened to visitors in 1984 on the site of the city’s first Bulgarian school. It includes a restored shoemaker’s workshop; its displays depict urban life in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The complex also presents the ethnographic traditions of Dobrudzha, the Gagauz people and Kotel. Textile exhibitions showcase various knitting techniques.

The Kavarna History Museum is located next to the restored medieval bathhouse, which was converted into a maritime museum. Its finds date from the 5th–6th centuries BC to 1940. The exhibits include silver coins from the hoard of Tsar Ivan Alexander. The Kavarna Rock Fest was held for the first time in 2006.

Nature

The Kaliakra protected area includes parts of Kavarna as well as a steep coast with caves and rock niches. Some of Bulgaria’s best-preserved steppe habitats are located there; 237 bird species have also been recorded. The Kaliakra area lies on the Via Pontica, an important European bird migration route.

Kavarna is also included in the Belite Skali protected area. This area comprises a steep coast and adjacent shallow marine waters.

Regional Cuisine

The Mussel and Fish Fest features demonstrations of seafood dishes and delicacies. The festival showcases the regional seafood cuisine.
