Dobrich-Selska: Valleys, Hiking Trails and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Dobrich-Selska
The Sukhata Valley runs through Dobrich-Selska from north to south. Dry valleys, terraced slopes, rocks and cliff faces shape the landscape and give the area its distinctive character. Those who enjoy taking a closer look at nature will find more than sweeping views here: over 460 plant species grow in the dry valley of the Sukhata, including 16 species on Bulgaria’s Red List; numerous endangered animal species are also found here. Species numbers may change as a result of future surveys.
Discover the Landscape and Nature
The Batova Valley offers a different kind of landscape. It is considered Bulgaria’s only “mountain beneath a plain”: wooded mountain slopes rise suddenly from the Dobrudzha Plain. The contrast between the open plain and the densely forested slopes is a special draw for anyone who wants to encounter a variety of landscapes on their trip.
The Botevo Hut is another useful landmark in the area. It sits at an altitude of 280 metres and has 28 beds, as well as a dining room for 40 people. If you factor these capacities into your overnight plans, have them confirmed in advance, as the information may change.
Fortresses, Rock Monasteries and Local History
The Sukhata Valley is home to the ruins of Thracian, Roman and medieval fortresses, as well as rock monasteries. Alongside its natural features, the valley’s different historical periods add another dimension. For a specific stop, consider the Kaleto Fortress: it lies about two kilometres southeast of the village of Odartsi and was built on a rocky peninsula shaped like a hill.
In the village of Stefan Karadzha, the Karalezka Fountain stands in a small park in the centre of the village. It features a “Cross of Valour” dedicated to members of the Third Bulgarian Army who fell in the struggle to liberate Dobrudzha during the Dobrich Epic. The site combines a small park with a specific historical commemoration.
In Prilep, the “Mihovi” Honey House combines an apiary with a museum-like exhibition and attracts tourist and educational groups. The beehives on display include a stone cave, hollow logs and tree hollows, a clay basket used in Egypt and Israel, and a woven beehive typical of the local area. If you plan to visit specifically to see the exhibits, check in advance what is currently on display.
Hikes for Different Time Frames
A one-day hiking route leads through the Sukhata Canyon from Karapelit towards Zhitnitsa. Along the way, there is an opportunity to visit the karst cave in the “Krali Markova stapka” area. A shorter option is the approximately four-hour hiking trail from Stozher to the Sweta Marina Monastery. These two time estimates can help you choose a tour based on the time available; they describe different routes, not a single combined trail.
The Batovska Trail runs from the “Buzluka” area to the “Gubkite” area, close to the village of Batovo. Check local conditions before setting out; seasonal access may vary for the hiking route through the Sukhata Canyon.
Choose a Holiday Apartment to Suit Your Trip
