Nature

The newly described cave shrimp Spelaeocaris electa was found in Plitica Cave in Dračevo. Another natural-history stop was the Plitica estavelle: During a karst excursion in 2023, it formed part of the excursion route, and the participants were able to see the estavelle. Both places represent different aspects of the karst landscape: Dračevo lies in the middle of Popovo Polje, which is described as one of the largest karst poljes in the world.

Culture and history

The Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God in Dračevo is included in the provisional list of national monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was built in 1892 on the foundations of an earlier church called “Sveti Kozma i Damjan.” Architecturally, it is a single-nave building with a barrel vault, a form described as characteristic of the Popovo Polje area. The building thus connects its present appearance with an older ecclesiastical site and with the regional architectural style.

The documented history of the town extends back to the Middle Ages: Dračevo was first mentioned in 1402 in documents held in the Dubrovnik Archives. A report from 1696 referred to Dračevo as the main town of Popovo Polje. During the Ottoman period, nine towers were built in Dračevo; some of them are still preserved. The historical image of the town therefore encompasses both its early documentary mention and its later fortification architecture.

Another traditional local feature is the game of boće. Dračevo was known for this sport; there were two courts in the town where boće was played. The two courts are therefore just as much part of the described local history as the church and the preserved towers.
