Discover Doomkerke: Trails, Landscape and Cultural Heritage

Doomkerke is a destination for travellers who want to combine trails through woodland and cultural landscapes with historic sites. The Parochieveld walking route, the Gallatas Trail and the “van Red Star Line tot Zeppelin” walking route offer different ways to discover the village and its surroundings. When choosing a holiday rental, it is therefore worth first considering whether your trip will be shaped more by days of hiking, a longer cycling tour, landscape experiences or cultural and historical sites.

Hiking between Vorte Bossen and Sint-Pietersveld

The 7.9 km signposted Parochieveld walking route starts at the church in Doomkerke. It leads through the Vorte Bossen and the Parochieveld into Sint-Pietersveld in Wingene. This makes it possible to include a set distance in your daily plans without having to estimate the length. The Gallatas Trail leads to the Disveld municipal estate and passes through the natural areas of the Vorte Bossen and Gallatasbossen. Together with the Bruwaan Trail in Kruiskerke, it can form an 8 km hike.

Shorter connections also play a role in finding your way around. The restored Gallatasdreefje footpath connects Brandstraat in the village centre of Doomkerke with Bruggesteenweg at the Vorte Bossen nature area. The new Disveldwegel footpath branches off from the Gallatasdreefje and leads to Disveld municipal park. The historic Doomkerke–Gallatasbossen footpath is an old connection between Bruggesteenweg and Brandstraat. Depending on your daily plans, you can thus include either a longer route or individual sections of trail in your stay.

Landscape with Wide Views

The three-hectare Disveld landscape park lies in the shadow of Doomkerke church tower and offers wide views of the open landscape, farmland and nearby Gallatasbossen. The boardwalk in Disveld has also been newly laid out. Those who want to experience the landscape without taking a long hike will find another specific point of interest here for planning their trip.

For a longer cycling tour, the 62.8 km Fusieroute is available. It passes through Wingene, Zwevezele and Ruiselede, including Doomkerke. The “van Red Star Line tot Zeppelin” route heads towards Scheepsput and then back to the church. As a walking route, it leads through the history of Doomkerke, combining physical activity with historical orientation.

Church, Castle and Protected Heritage

Sint-Caroluskerk is a Neo-Gothic church with a polychrome interior and distinctive decorative details. The parish church of Carolus Borromeus has been protected as a monument since 11 June 1976. Kasteeldomein De Roo on Disveld is also part of the village’s history: on the eastern side, it was completely converted around 1867 into a small castle with two corner towers; a coach house was built to the south of it.

The park, castle and estate of Kasteel De Roo, also known as “Kasteel Coffyn”, are included in the protected landscape of Sint-Pietersveld. This landscape was protected by ministerial decree on 24 June 2002. For travellers interested in culture, this creates a stay in which trails, landscape and historic buildings provide different focal points.

When looking for accommodation in Doomkerke, you can base your choice on your preferred pace of travel. For hiking days, the routes mentioned and their respective lengths are important planning points; for a cycling tour, the Fusieroute offers a considerably larger distance. On a trip involving different interests, you can combine nature experiences in Disveld with the church, castle grounds and historical route. The new visitor car park for Bulskampveld landscape park and the newly redesigned village square by the school and church in Doomkerke were completed at the end of 2025; work began in 2023.
