Discover Dentergem

Dentergem combines cultural and historical discoveries with marked paths and a rolling landscape. Anyone looking for a mix of short walks, distinctive buildings and longer routes for their holiday can combine various day-trip ideas here. When choosing your holiday apartment or holiday home, it is therefore worth considering your preferred travel rhythm first: would you like to explore chapels and historic sites, plan a hike, or combine both?

Churches, mills and historic sites

A prominent historical landmark is the Onze-Lieve-Vrouw en Sint-Stephanus parish church. The neo-Gothic parish church was built between 1854 and 1856, while the older western tower dates from 1613. Different eras therefore come together in one building. The Goethalsmolen also offers a tangible insight into the region’s milling history: it is a grain and oil mill with a millstone floor and an oil cellar.

The Sint-Anna ruin was converted in 2023 into an events venue with a public viewing plateau. From there, you can enjoy views of the Meikensbossen and the Poelberg. This makes it an interesting destination for travellers who want to combine traces of history with experiencing the landscape. The Brouwerijgoed estate is another part of the area’s historical character. It consists of a house and a perpendicular barn with a cart shed dating from the 18th century and is accessible via a gravel driveway.

Smaller religious sites also play a role. The Annakapel and the Kapel Onze-Lieve-Vrouw Bezoeking are part of the annual Kapellekensomgang, which takes place around the middle of August. The Kapel Onze-Lieve-Vrouw Bezoeking is believed to have been built in the second half of the 19th century; cadastral records indicate a construction period between 1894 and 1901.

Walking routes for different levels

For a compact loop, the marked Meikensbospad, at 5 km long, provides a clear route. The Baliekouter walking trail is approximately 2.6 km long and passes through a play forest and water-rich meadows, then returns along the Mandelbeek. Those who prefer a longer tour will find another option in the 11 km-long Blossom Walking Route. It starts at JOC Dentergem and is marked with blue arrows.

Pay close attention to the differences between the routes: the buggy-friendly Dentergem Blossom Route is not signposted and does not pass through the orchards. When planning with children or people with different walking preferences, this information may be more important than a mere indication of distance. The Poelberg–Meikensbossen walking network runs through the rolling landscape on the border between Tielt and Dentergem and complements the shorter paths with another perspective on the landscape.

A route connection for slow traffic was also opened in summer 2024. It runs from the bridge at Baliekouter in Ommegangstraat 11 to Domein Kloosterhof in the direction of Kapellestraat. This allows you to plan your outings around a specific connection without having to fit all the experiences into a single hike.

Peaceful breaks and the right accommodation

A special resting point is located at the corner of Dreve and Statiestraat. The green village rest and meeting place offers seating amid diverse plantings specifically designed to attract bees and butterflies. The redesign of this historic corner gives it a function as a place for rest and encounters for residents and visitors to Dentergem. You can take such quieter stops into account when planning a trip alongside the walking routes and cultural destinations.

When historic sites are the focus, churches, chapels, the mill and Sint-Anna can form the cultural centrepiece. For more active days, the Meikensbospad, the Baliekouter trail or longer sections of the walking network provide useful orientation.
