Heyd is shaped by rural architectural styles and a variety of natural features. The village has several longhouses and half-timbered houses; the walking trails pass through changing landscapes. Al Basse Hé runs through a network of hedgerows in a landscape shaped by arable farming and livestock farming. The family walking trail Hé des Pourceaux passes through beech and spruce forests near Heyd and offers views across the Condroz. If you are looking for a holiday rental, you can consider whether you would like your days out to focus more on walking and nature, or also on rural architecture.

Hedgerow landscape and biodiversity

The hedgerows along Al Basse Hé provide shelter for many plant and animal species, including hares, hedgehogs and linnets. They are more than just a visual border around the fields: they form a defining landscape feature within an area used for arable and livestock farming. If you pay attention to habitats and their structure while out walking, you will find a tangible nature theme alongside the exercise. The interplay of agriculture and hedgerows describes a landscape where cultivated land and sheltered spaces lie side by side.

Walks by distance and landscape

The Domaine de Hottemme circular trail is 4.5 km long and starts at the car park of the Hottemme Museum. Information on Al Basse Hé, updated on 5 October 2024, gives its length as 4.2 km and lists Col du Rideux as the starting point. The distances are similar, but the stated starting points differ. If you include both walks in your plans, you can weigh up the distance and starting point together rather than choosing based only on the trail name.

The Domaine de Hottemme circular trail combines natural and cultural features. The Domaine is home to around 700 different plant and tree species. The route also passes a pavilion: its walls are decorated with painted birds, and its ceiling depicts Diana as a huntress, in a design dating from around 1930. This places the Domaine’s plant diversity and the pavilion’s distinctive decoration side by side as different experiences.

Beech and spruce forests define the scenery along the family walking trail Hé des Pourceaux, along with views across the Condroz region. This offers a different emphasis from Al Basse Hé, with its hedgerows and farming landscape. If you choose a walk by its scenery, you can distinguish between forest and views on the one hand, and hedgerow landscapes on the other.

Rural architecture in Heyd

Several 19th-century longhouses were built from limestone or sandstone rubble. A longhouse is an elongated house form; the rubble-stone description identifies the building material used. Heyd also has a number of half-timbered houses, which showcase a different building style. Together, these house types offer two specific points of interest for anyone who would like to explore rural architecture as well as nature during their stay.

A practical note

A description last updated on 15 December 2022 states that Saint-Martin Church in Heyd has an induction loop for people with hearing impairments. If this facility is important for your visit, check in advance whether it is available for use.
